The
amount
of
time
you
have
to
devote
to
the
course
|
|
|
The
amount
of
money
you
are
prepared
to
spend

|
|
What
your
requirements
are
–
where
you
intend
to
seek
TEFL
employment
(which
country
and
what
level
of
institution)
|

Your
current
educational
status
–
whether
you
have
a
degree
or
teaching
qualification
or
not
|
An individual’s chances of gaining employment depend
on a variety of factors:
|
|
the
qualifications
required
by
the
employer
–
these
vary
depending
on
where
the
employer
is
located
geographically
which,
in
turn,
seems
to
influence
the
qualification
requirements
imposed
by
the
national
administration
and
the
intensity
of
competition
among
teachers.
For
example:
it
is
more
difficult
to
find
employment
in
London,
where
qualification
requirements
are
higher
and
where
there
is
a
greater
concentration
of
teachers
with
higher
level
qualifications,
than
it
is
in
certain
regions
of
South
America
or
the
Far
East
where
individuals
with
higher
level
qualifications
are
more
scarce
and
requirements
are
less
stringent.
|
In
addition
to a
TEFL
qualification,
other
qualifications
that
influence
an employer’s
choice
of employee
include:
|
|
Bachelors
degrees
or
higher,
often
with
preference
given
to
degree-holders
with
English
as
a
specialisation
(e.g.
BA
–
with
English
as
a
major
subject,
B.
Com,
B.Soc.Sc,
MA,
PhD.)
|
|
|
Teaching
qualifications
(e.g.
HDE,
PGCE)
|
Bachelors

It
is a
fact
that
some
South-East
Asian
countries
do not
require
any
formal
EFL
training
at all
and
will
permit
native
English
speakers
who
hold
an undergraduate
degree
to be
employed
as EFL
teachers. Of course individuals with basic TEFL
training have a distinct advantage over those with no TEFL experience at all.
This is particularly so in negotiations over rates of pay and in prospects for
promotion.
the passport status of the teacher – it is unlikely
that
a TEFL
employer
in Europe
will
go through
the
trouble
of assisting
with
a work
visa
application
for
the
holder
of a
non-European
passport
when
England
has
a wealth
of speakers
and
teachers
of English.
Naturally
this
is different
if one
holds
a European
Union
passport.
South
African
passport
holders
need
not
despair.
Huge
areas
of the
world
are
open
to them,
depending
on the
particular
country’s
work
visa
requirements.
Broad
geographical
regions
where
South
African
passport
holders
can
be found
teaching
EFL
include
countries
in Asia,
the
Middle
East,
the
Far
East
and
South
America.
